Provincial Laws
Provinces have the primary responsibility for the protection of animals, including their on-farm conditions. Provincial legislation is described in Provincial and Territorial Legislation Concerning Farm Animal Welfare by CFIA. This provides a comprehensive summary of Canada’s legislative and voluntary animal welfare standards.
The FACs groups prepared a summary report in 2013 outlining how farm animal welfare enforcement is conducted throughout Canada. Legislative changes are on-going and are considered accurate at the time of writing. Content includes:
- Federal Legislation
- Use of Criminal Code
- Provincial Animal Welfare Acts
- How Animal Protection is Enforced
- Funding of Enforcement
