Euthanasia

Euthanasia comes from the Greek words ‘eu’ meaning well and ‘thanatos’ meaning death translating to ‘good death’. It’s an unfortunate reality that from time to time, an animal will become sick or injured and must be euthanized. There can also be other situations including animal health, financial or times when caregivers are unable to care for their animals which may require animals to be euthanized. Providing farm animals with a quick painless death is something that farmers take very seriously. It is not always an easy decision to have to euthanize a farm animal, but is an important one.

The TED

TEDThe TED is a modified nail gun developed by Bock Industries as a response to the need for better practices for euthanizing cull stock in turkey barns. The TED is a non-penetrating captive bolt gun that operates off of a regular rechargeable battery and a butane cartridge. Through concussive force it renders the animal unconscious and then insensible without breaking the skin on the head, reducing any biosecurity issues and very little mess left to clean up.

While blunt force trauma and cervical dislocation are proven scientific and acceptable methods for euthanasia, the TED is another option for farmers to consider. One major benefit to using the TED is that it offers the same identical force every time the trigger is pulled with little physical exertion needed. There is also an added worker safety component because the bolt head is contained and there are no loose projectiles involved. Everything is contained and unless directly put against a surface and fired there is little chance of human injuries.

The Zephyr

ZephyrEThe Zephyr was originally developed for use in rabbit abattoirs. Much like the TED, the Zephyr is based off a modified nail gun design that has been further developed to be used on other small animals. Currently there are two options for powering the Zephyr, traditional air compressor up to 120 PSI or more recently a portable CO2 canister attachment. The CO2 adaptor is an extra cost of $200.00 and makes the zephyr portable.

The zephyr is currently being used on chickens, ducks, geese, fish, nursery piglets and rabbits.
