  • PhD in Applied Ethology (applied animal behaviour)
  • Primary area of expertise is in studying the behaviour of farm animals and the use of that information for improving the way farm animals are managed and cared for.

Bio: Derek Haley received a Master of Science degree from the University of Guelph and a PhD from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatchewan. His area of expertise is applied animal behaviour and he has been studying the behaviour and the welfare of farm animals since 1993. Dr. Haley is an Assistant Professor of Applied Ethology in the Department of Population Medicine at the University of Guelph. His time is split between developing his research program in applied ethology, while teaching veterinary students and graduate this subject, as well as teaching them about the subject of animal welfare. Additionally Derek spends a portion of his time sharing of information about animal behaviour and welfare with those involved in livestock production.

Presentation Specific to Which Livestock Industry: Dr. Haley has given presentations to a very wide variety of livestock industries and has a working familiarity with the behaviour and welfare issues associated
with many different agricultural animal species.
