Background/Area of Expertise: Veterinary anesthesiologist with an interest in food animal anesthesia and pain control. Interested in the welfare of all livestock species. Major research focus has been on cattle and deer.

Bio: Graduated from WCVM in 1989, and went into mixed (predominantly beef) practice. Returned to WCVM in 1990 to do a residency in anesthesiology. Completed residency and master of veterinary science in 1993. Master's work focused on xylazine analgesia for c-section in cattle, and castration of bulls. On faculty at WCVM until 2006. Currently a professor of veterinary anesthesiology at the University of Calgary.

Presentation Specific to Which Livestock Industry: Beef and dairy.

Presentation Title: Control of pain during common husbandry procedures in cattle.

Presentation Summary: This presentation will discuss perspectives on pain control for common procedures. e.g. castration, dehorning, tail docking, branding. The presentation will discuss perspectives from other parts of the world. It will discuss the practicality of the techniques that are currently available, and it will discuss the need to develop cost effective and practical techniques that can be used by the producer.

Speaker Cost: All travel expenses, and a donation to an account that will be set up and directed towards research into farm animal welfare.
