Dr. David Biesenthal Stonegate Farms Background/Area of Expertise: Veterinarian. Farmer - cash crop, beef. Bio: Dr. Biesenthal received his DVM from the University of Guelph in 1968 and practices as an Equine. Veterinarian three days a week. Dr. Biesenthal operates a cow/calf (50 cows) operation with his wife, as well as a cash-crop enterprise with son. They grow wheat, soybeans, grain corn, canola, oats and white beans on 1600 acres. Presentation Title: Walkerton Water Tragedy: A Farmers Experience Presentation Summary: Dr. Biesenthal will discuss the involvement of agriculture in the Walkerton water situation - their farm was implicated in the contamination of the water supply. Dr. Biesenthal will discuss the vulnerability of farmers, investigations - investigators scouring your farm for information; media - how the media can manipulate and print anything they so desire; legal proceedings - they were served with a $350 million lawsuit; inquiry - what they had to go through with the subsequent inquiry; and stress and loss of income. He will also discuss how to protect yourself as a farmer by: Environmental Farm Plan - demonstrate “due diligence” which helped them exonerate their farm in the lawsuit; Nutrient Management Plans - keeping track of nutrients you apply to the land; Records - daily logs, nutrient inputs - dates and amounts; yields; and Personal Pride and Satisfaction. Speaker Cost: Travel for both Dr. Biesenthal and his wife to the event as well as all other expenses.
